Let’s face it. When we are on vacation, one of our favorite things to do is eat. And in Amsterdam, there are so many delicious foods to try So today, we are going to eat our way around the city and show you the top 10 foods that you must try when you’re in Amsterdam and where to find them. So we’re at Cafe Papeneiland and we are having their apple pie that they make here in the cafe downstairs And it is amazing! Haring or herring is a type of raw but ripened fish that you can find in street stands all across the country. You eat them in pieces with pickles or onions or you could grab it by the tail and eat it whole. It’s a popular, local delicacy but many of the visitors have their reservations… No, no, I don’t want to try it, no! I can”t do it until they actually try it. For the full Dutch experience, you must try it for yourself. I think it looks and tastes great. Fantastique! We are now at the Pancake Bakery, which is on the Prinsengracht… …where they serve possibly the best pancakes in the entire city. You can order all types of toppings like sweet with fresh fruit or savory like ham and cheese. Or you could do a combination of both. Today, we got the traditional ham and cheese You then top it off with stroop, or syrup which tastes like a light caramel rather than maple. I hope I don’t make a mess Wowwww. And finally, you get to add some powdered sugar When I’m cutting it, you can kind of see how thin it is… …compared to American pancakes. Umm. Delicious! Come on over to FEBO! At this Dutch fast food restaurant, you can just walk up to the automat, put in your money and pick out your food. Here you can try foods such as croquettes, frikandellen and cheese soufflet FEBO is a popular, late night hangout and nothing cures a hangover like fried food. Oliebollen are sweet, fried treats, sort of like big doughnut holes. Some with raisins or cream inside and topped with powdered sugar These are the best. They go everywhere. Yeah! You can find them at stands all over town during the holidays. Are you hungry yet? Right in the center of town, off the Spui is Vleminckx and it is one of the best places in the city to get Belgian Fries. So Belgian Fries are pretty much the same as French Fries in the U.S…. …but the difference is in the sauces. Mayonnaise and sate sauce are the most popular, but you can also get them with ketchup. So, here I ordered the Patatje Oorlog, or the Potato War. So this comes with all the sauces plus onions. So here you also get these cute little forks so you don’t get sauce all over your fingers. Yum yum! In places like the Albert Cuyp street market and fun festivals, you can find stands selling poffertjes- small, mini-pancakes covered in butter and powdered sugar. Sometimes you can cover them with fruit or chocolate sauce. The Netherlands is known for its beer. Over the past couple of years, craft breweries are becoming ever popular and going to bars selling craft beers is something you must do. Places like In de Wildeman or Arendsnest… …or you can go to breweries like de Prael or Oedipus… …and sample their beers in their tasting rooms. This is the Foodhallen in Amsterdam Oud-West. And it is one of the best food halls in all of Europe. And here you’ll find the Ballen Bar, where they specialize in making bitterballen. Bitterballen are small balls of crispy, deep fried dough that are filled with meat and a ragout gravy. Traditionally, you dip them in mustard. But here, they also fill them with all sorts of delicious things. Besides the traditional one, we’ve got a bouillabaisse, we have here a coconut and next to that is a spinach and old cheese and finally on the end we have one filled with truffle. Since it’s a gravy in the middle, they tend to be very hot so be careful when you are taking that first bite. This is another Dutch treat that you must try. This is a stroopwafel and here at this stand the Albert Cuypmarkt they actually make them fresh. This is the dough. I put it inside here. Then I slice it in two and the syrup comes between. This is the traditional, caramel syrup… … and the other half goes on top.
